The fishtail braid (also known as herringbone braids) is one of the most popular hairstyles today. This braid is more complex than the basic braid but the steps below show you how it is done.You can do this on your own. The only material needed is a hair band.
Step 1
Decide if you want to pull the hair in a ponytail or just gather it. A ponytail will make the braid tighter while the latter method lets you determine how tight the braid will be.
Step 2
Separate a portion of the hair where the braid begins. This can be at the ponytail’s top or the head’s middle top. Divide this into two equal parts. To make fishtail braids, grab both of them with your left hand but separate them using the fingers.
Step 3
Get a small amount of the hair from the right side. If you tried the ponytail technique, collect the hair from the bottom right part. Now cross this over to the right section. Add this to the left section.
Step 4
With the hair still separated by the fingers, move the hair to your right hand. This means your left hand will be able to work on the left section.
Step 5
Collect a bit of the small hair from the left portion. To make fishtail braids, cross this over the left part. Add this to the right part.
Step 6
Put the separated hair back in your right hand. Repeat steps 4 to 5 until you cannot add any more hair. For the ponytail technique, you should end up with just a couple of inches left. There should be two sections remaining.
Step 7
If you are using the loose technique, hold one section per hand. Separate some at the left portion. Add this separated piece to the right. Collect a small amount from the right. Separate it and add to the left. Keep repeating this until you have fishtail braids.
Step 8
Get the hair band and fasten the remaining hair. Make sure you leave some at the end.
Tips and Warnings
This hairstyle is easier to do if the hair is at least of medium length. The hair must also be dry. When you are braiding the hair, ensure the sections are of equal length. This will make the hairstyle look more professional and uniform.
Method II
This method makes use of some hair spray but the basic process is the same. Brush the hair and grab an inch from both sides from the sideburns to the temple. Pull this to the crown. Cross the right over to the left.
Press the cross with your right hand. Get another section with your left hand. Take it below the first section. Place this over the right hand. At the cross over section, swap and hold with the left hand. Keep repeating until you’re done. Add some hair spray and you’re done.
Fishtail braids may look complicated but they are actually easy to do. By following the steps indicated, your braids should come out looking dandy.
